5 Vegetable Gardening Super Tips

28 February 2010 179 Comments

There’s nothing quite like growing your own fresh vegetables from the comfort of your own home or garden. Vegetable gardening is not only good for your health, but it can be good for your wallet too. Just imagine, no more wasting money on overpriced veg at the supermarket, you can simply go out into the yard and pick your own. If all this sounds good to you, and you want to start your own vegetable garden then here are 5 vegetable gardening super tips to help you.

1. When planning your vegetable garden, location is important. Your vegetable garden should be close enough to the home so that it is convenient for you to go out and pick your veg when you want to. The location should also get plenty of natural sunlight and should be on flat ground.

2. If you only have a small garden or if you are planting your vegetables in containers then try and stick to the smaller varieties. Only plant what you think you are going to need and will use. It is no good planting pumpkins if no one in your family will eat them or use them.

3. We all know that your vegetable garden will need plenty of water, but you should also try and not give it too much. Keep in mind that if you live in a rainy and wet climate then your vegetables will be getting plenty of water from the rain. If you live in a dry climate or your vegetable garden is indoors then it will need more water than an outdoor one.

4. The type of soil you have in your garden can mean the difference between a good crop of vegetables and a bad one. You may be thinking “soil is just soil”, but there are many different kinds. It may help to add a little bit of compost that is full of nutrients to your soil to ensure your vegetables grow well.

5. It is important that you weed your vegetable garden on a regular basis. If weeds are left unattended then they can steal the nutrients and water that your vegetables need in order to grow. The trick is to eliminate weeds before they get too big or flower. If weeds are taken away early on it will prevent them from spreading.
